Biographical

Andrea I. Doseff, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor with tenure in the Department of Molecular Genetics (75%) and the Department of Physiology and Cell Biology (25%) at The Ohio State University. Dr. Doseff received her bachelor’s degree from University of Sciences of Buenos Aires, Argentina and her PhD from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, New York working in cell cycle regulation. She completed her postdoctoral training in apoptosis at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. She joined The Ohio State University as an Assistant Professor in 2002. She leads a multidisciplinary research team recognized nationally and internationally in the area of cell death and health-related mechanisms of flavonoids. Her findings have been published in PNAS, Immunity, Genetics, Journal of Biological Chemistry, Biochemical Pharmacology, and Journal of Immunology among others. She serves as Associate Editor and ad-hoc reviewer for several journals. She has received funding continuously from National Institute of Health, National Science Foundation, USDA, The American Lung Association and The American Heart Association. She serves as grant reviewer chair for American Heart Association and as ad-hoc for NSF and NIH. She teaches and has developed courses for undergraduate and graduate students. She is the co-Director of the Dual PhD Program OSU-University of São Paulo, Brazil and directs the SiGuE (Success in Graduate Education), post-baccalaureate program.

2002-2009 Molecular Genetics 500 (Department of Mol. Genetics. Core class for undergraduate students).
Credit hrs: 5. Students enrolled: 275 to 325. Period: Fall quarter.
Content: Molecular biology and genetics. Course for non-major genetic students.
Contribution: I was responsible for half of all the lectures, designing half of the midterms and half of the final. I managed 6 to 7 teaching assistants and provided office hours.

2013&emsp&emsp Atlas Genome Journal Club. Offered: January to May 2013, twice a month.

Content: knowledge of latest technologies used for genome-wide analysis including Gateway cloning, yeast one and two hybrid, introduction to software used in GWAS analyses and bioinformatics approaches to identify gene regulatory networks.
Contribution: I developed the curriculum. I presented 50% of all the 30 min. lectures and I was responsible of promoting and mediating the discussions. I selected the articles presented in class. The other 50% of the lectures were done by one of my postdocs as part of her career’s development plan.

Content: This course is for undergraduate students performing research in my laboratory.

&emsp&emspContent: This course is for students performing research in my laboratory that are conducting an honor research thesis.
&emsp&emspContribution: I meet with students once per week one-to-one to teach them how to design experiments. We also meet once a week in lab meetings as a group, where trainees will present current progress of their research. I teach students interpreting data, write fellowship, scientific articles, posters and the honor thesis. I also help students with oral presentations.

&emspCredits hrs: 1 to 2. Students enrolled: 8 (in 2013) and 13 (in 2014). Fall semester.
&emspThe course is directed to PhD students from several different programs including: Molecular Genetics, Molecular Cellular and Development Biology, OSBP, Nutrition, Optometry, and by senior undergraduate students from different majors.
&emspContent: Network theory applied to signal transduction pathways involved contributing to the pathophysiology of inflammatory diseases and cancer. As part of the course students were also required to present an article in groups followed by discussion and write an abstract that was graded.
&emspContribution: I developed the curriculum, provided 100% of the lectures, developed and graded final, midterms, exercises and presented a hands-on workshop on large data analyses.

2009-2012&emspMolecular Genetics 660. Integrated Molecular and Cellular Biology for non-biologist I.
&emspCredit hrs: 5. Students enrolled: 8 to 12 depending on the year. Fall &emsp&emspsemester.
Content: This course was intended for master and PhD students in Mathematics. The course consisted in lectures, interactive activities and included also one week of laboratory experience and one day of poster presentations by the students and 3 days of manuscript presentations.
Contribution: I developed the curriculum in collaboration with Drs. H. Chamberlain and E. Grotewold. I taught 40% of all the lectures during the fall semester, developed and graded midterms and finals. Lead discussion during paper presentations.

i)&emspAcademic advising of a Research Associate 2012-1014. My role included planning of the daily experimental schedule, data interpretation and preparation of results for publication. I conducted weekly meetings and revised notebooks daily.

ii)&emspAdvising visiting scholars (9 since my last promotion). My roles include developing projects, helping students in setting experiments, analyzing data and interpreting results. I meet with trainees one to one weekly and during our weekly lab.

iii)&emspAdvising of STEM underrepresented undergraduate students (10 since my last promotion). I host students in my lab as part of three summer initiatives: the SROP OSU program, the Molecular Genetics-Biochemistry REU program and the SUCCESS program. My roles include developing projects, helping students to set experiments, analyze data, prepare data for presentations and developing critical thinking. In addition, I meet with them weekly one to one, I attend their oral, poster and journal club presentations, I meet with parents (SUCCESS program) and attend events such as dinners, banquets etc. I also revise their written projects and continue being in touch with most of them over the years.

iv)&emspAdvising SiGuE post-baccalaureate fellows (6 since my last promotion). My roles include developing projects, helping students in setting experiments, analyzing data and interpreting results. Developing opportunities to increase their self-esteem and provide orientation for application to graduate school or professional careers. I meet with trainees one to one weekly and during our weekly lab.

v)&emsp I advised a junior faculty Dr. Marketton (2009-2013)

vi)&emspIn my laboratory I advice postdocs, graduate and undergraduate students. My roles include conducting weekly meetings to discuss experiments, develop their projects, assisting in data analyses and preparation of data for presentations and publications. I provide advice in fellowship’s preparation and presentations (21 fellowships/scholarships and 27 awards for best presentations were obtained by my trainees since my last promotion).

vii)&emspAdvising graduate students in the Translational Plant Sciences program and serving as graduate studies committee (GSC) member. This is a different program characterized by a personalized curriculum. Students together with the GSC decide their minimum number of courses to take, meeting with the GSC are scheduled twice a year and presentations of students to the GSC take place at least once a year.

Content: knowledge of latest technologies used for genome-wide analysis including Gateway cloning, yeast one and two hybrid, introduction to software used in GWAS analyses and bioinformatics approaches to identify gene regulatory networks.
Contribution: I developed the curriculum. I presented 50% of all the 30 min. lectures and I was responsible of promoting and mediating the discussions. I selected the articles presented in class. The other 50% of the lectures were done by one of my postdocs as part of her career’s development plan.

Genome-wide regulation of alternative splicing by dietary apigenin controls anti-apoptotic-associated resistance in breast cancer.
