Academic Advising

As part of my role as the Associate Dean for Medical Education, I act as an academic advising resource to all medical students, and meet formally and informally with a large percentage of students at one point or another during their time in the College of Medicine. I maintain an "open door" policy (for both students and faculty) to assist with informal academic advising. I also meet in a more formal way with some students who encounter academic difficulty. Along with the Associate Dean for Student Life, we meet with approximately half of each class for career advising purposes at least once, and additional students at various points during their medical education program. I also serve as the point of contact and primary academic advisor for students who are in joint and/or combined degree programs.

I am currently an Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine - Clinical, and am seeking promotion to Associate Professor - Clinical on the Clinician Educator Pathway.

I started at Ohio State University in August 2008, recruited as a Transplant Infectious Diseases and HIV clinician with an interest in education. My position was initially primarily clinical service-oriented, with clinical duties in both the hospital and clinic settings. As my educational activities expanded, my clinical time has since become a more minor role. My educational activities started with appointment as Deputy Director for Education in the Comprehensive Transplant Center. They broadened to include resident and fellow education, and aspects of medical student education. With increased involvement in education, my focus has narrowed to medical student education. My areas of content expertise have been connected between my clinical and educational activities: infectious diseases, particularly in immunocompromised hosts, and health care of sexual and gender minority populations (LGBT populations).

As I value the academic medical mission, I have strived to maintain a scholarly approach to clinical and administrative activities of the university, and to maintain scholarly involvement in keeping with my areas of content expertise. I have thus contributed to publications and abstracts on topics ranging from clinical infectious diseases to the role of the academic medical center in promoting LGBT health and minimizing LGBT health disparities. I have maintained involvement in clinical research, acting as a site principal investigator for multisite clinical trials, and contributing content expertise in the design of clinical trials investigating sexually transmitted infections in sexual minority populations. I have also continued to maintain teaching roles, and believe that my teaching has been received positively as reflected by positive evaluations and teaching awards, including the 2014 Professor of the Year (the highest award that can be bestowed upon a College of Medicine faculty member by the students).

In sum, I believe I meet the criteria for promotion to Associate Professor - Clinical on the Clinician Educator pathway, not only by representative metrics, but more importantly in attempting to embody the philosophy. As the Associate Dean for Medical Education, my role leading the medical school curriculum has allowed me to develop a national reputation in curriculum innovation and implementation. My work with LGBT populations, particularly with GLMA (the national organization for health professionals advancing LGBT equality) and the AAMC (our national organization of academic medical centers and educators) Group on Diversity and Inclusion, has allowed me to develop a national reputation in both clinical care and educational/administration efforts in LGBT areas.
