Video Capsule Endoscopy
I am especially proud of Dr. Peter Stanich, whom I have mentored since he entered our gastroenterology fellowship program in 2011. Due to my guidance and mentorship, Dr. Stanich has attained national recognition as a clinical researcher in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition. He is the Head of the Section of Intestinal Neoplasia and Hereditary Polyposis within our division. He has presented an important abstract discussing PTEN hamartoma syndrome and authored the manuscript as well. I was the senior author on this paper. THIS MANUSCRIPT WAS RECENTLY CITED BY THE THOUGHT LEADERS IN GI GENETICS AND INHERITED SYNDROMES, showing an important impact for all of us on this field. Dr. Stanich and I have published eight manuscripts together and he continues to ask insightful clinical questions. Over the course of our mentoring relationship, I have helped him learn to narrow the clinical focus of a research project to improve the likelihood of significant results, consult on complex statistical methods prior to data collection, applying data analysis within the context of our clinical question, and persuasive scientific writing. He will continue to have success as he gains additional experience and grows his Hereditary Polyposis Clinic.
Another mentee I am excited to discuss is Dr. Bryan Kleinman. I mentored Bryan during his internal medicine residency at Ohio State. He diligently worked on several video capsule research projects with my group and we have co-authored four publications together, where he has first author on one and a significant contributor on the remaining works. I taught Bryan how to perform clinical research including formulation of the clinical question, assessment of necessary data to collect, data analysis and manuscript writing. Bryan successfully matched into a gastroenterology fellowship at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, PA. Most notably, he was ONE OF ONLY TEN DO CREDENTIALED PHYSICIANS TO MATCH into gastroenterology fellowship (out of 385 matched candidates) in the United States in 2014.
Finally, I continue to enjoy a mentoring relationship with Dr. Jennifer Behzadi, a current Ohio State internal medicine resident. Jenny will be joining my gastroenterology fellowship in July 2016 and we were ecstatic to keep her after aggressive recruiting from Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, MA, affiliated with Harvard Medical School. My mentoring of Jenny started early during her intern year, where she expressed an interest in clinical research. I helped counsel her to find the most fitting project, given her limited time to conduct research. She teamed up with our pancreatitis group, and was recognized with a PRESIDENTIAL POSTER AWARD at The Annual Scientific Meeting of the American College of Gastroenterology in 2015 (Honolulu, HI). She has a very strong interest in medical education and I will continue to mentor her during gastroenterology fellowship where I expect to mold her into another leader in gastroenterology higher education.
One manuscript that continues to demonstrate impact is "Olmesartan-associated sprue-like enteropathy." This was a case report discussing this important clinical entity which HAD NOT BEEN PREVIOUSLY REPORTED IN THE GASTROENTEROLOGY LITERATURE. To date this publication has been cited 27 times (Google Scholar, search date 4/11/16), including a CITATION FROM AN INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED LEADER IN CELIAC DISEASE.
Furthermore, my video capsule research has been impactful as my group was the first to report positive safety outcomes for patients with gastric bypass surgery and those patients taking opiate analgesics. We also confirmed that performing video capsule endoscopy in patients with implantable cardiac devices was safe, previously a relative contraindication by the device manufacturer. In addition, my group showed that swallowing the video capsule is as safe and effective compared to those with the video capsule placed endoscopically. This work will enable other providers to save patients risk and cost of endoscopy procedures when undergoing video capsule endoscopy.
I am very pleased to describe my Gastroenterology Fellowship Pivotal Papers Log. I created this online forum of >250 pivotal manuscripts to give trainees access to the historical papers that continue to influence the practice of gastroenterology and hepatology. The papers are indexed on Carmen, which is accessible at any location through the OSU website. These papers serve as a highly selected reading list and are indexed according to each rotation within the fellowship curriculum. As such, a trainee can read the essential primary literature to answer clinical questions in real time at the point of patient care. I have been approached by the American Gastroenterological Association on how this resource could be distributed to fellowships across the United States, as the educational material is widely applicable to all gastroenterology trainees.
