Current OSU Appointments

Assistant Professor-Clinical, Cardiovascular Medicine

Physician, FGP-Cardiovascular Medicine

Service Activities

My current contract and clinical appointment assigns 75% of my time to clinical services, 20% to scholarly activities including research, and 5% of my time to administrative duties.

Academic Advising

I currently serve as the formal reseach mentor for two internal medicine residents.

Professional Interests Narrative

My current profesional interests focus on:

  • Improving therapies and treatments available to heart failure patients by conducting clinical studies and trials

  • Improving therapies and treatments available to heart failure patients by participating in design phase of clinical studies and trials

  • Improving the delivery of currently available therapies through QI evaluations and initiatives

Approach & Goals to Teaching

Although I am actively involved with formal didactic avenues to teach (lecture series, grand rounds, etc), my preferred and primary method of teaching is direct instruction and observation of medical students, residents, and fellows in clinical settings. I  perceive my most effective teaching comes when I have an opportunity to integarte the learners into the active care of a patient and directly prompt them to apply new knowledge to the real life situation we are addressing.

Evaluation of Teaching

In general, my teaching style and content are well received, both during formal didactic sessions as well as during bedside teaching.  My formal didactic evaluations consistently tend to score highly (>4.7/5).  Likewise, my resident and fellow feedback scores consistently well, with scores >4.2/5 in all domains.  Specific comments received on formal evaluations has been positive as well, such as the following from a resident who rotated on the Inpatient Heart Failure Service: "I enjoyed my CHF rotation with Dr. Emani, it was busy but very educational. I had a better understanding of pathophysiology of heart failure, LVAD, and heart transplant thanks to Dr. Emani's teaching."  Several residents have commented that they would enjoy working with me again as well.

Biographical

In addition to providing high-quality patient care, professional committment is to improve the tools we have to treat our patients through ongoing clinical research.  During my time as assistant professor, I believe I have laid the appropriate foundation for ongoing success towards this goal in a fashion that promotes both institutional and individual reputation.  Noteble milestones to this end include:

  • Being named the Director of Heart Failure Clinial Trials within the Heart and Vascular Research Organization. As Director, the following have occured:

    • Increased the number of open clinical trials by >15

    • High-volume screening and enrollment into clinical trials

    • Identified as top enrollers in 5 trials (all of which are multi-center trials)

    • First in the United States to enroll in the SWIFT-HF trial (including first human implant of the investigational device in the United States)

    • Selected as national lead site for studies evaluating remote hemodynamic monitoring options in heart failure patients with end-stage renal disease

    • Have been selected by 2 industry-sponsors to be the first site in the US to trial new technologies

  • Personally, I have been selected to serve on national/international committees overseeing novel clinical work.  These selections were unsolicted and offered based on my reputation and accomplishments.

    • Publication committee for the PREVENT Study

    • Hemodynamic Workgroup for the MOMENTUM 3 Study

    • Steering Committe for the INTELLECT 3 Study

    • Clinical Events Committee of the upcoming EvaHeart LVAD US Pivotal Trial

    • International Consensus Committee on the Management of the Sensitized Heart Transplant Patient

    • Abstract Reviewer Selection Committee for the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplant

  • My academic productivity (publications) has steadily increased over the past sevearl years
