Current OSU Appointments

Associate Professor-Clinical, Pulm,Allergy,Crit Care & Sleep

Physician, FGP-Pulm-Allrgy-CritCare-Sleep

Biographical

In 1999 I joined the faculty at Ohio State as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine. In 2005 I was promoted to Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine. At OSU I have had a variety of roles and my career has significantly evolved. My initial focus was that of a clinical educator but since my promotion in 2005 I have functioned as a clinician/clinical administrator with over 90% of my time devoted to clinical care and clinical administration. Since 2005 my clinical activity has been primarily focused in the inpatient environment and my clinical administrative duties have included Vice Chair for the Department of Medicine, Clinical Director and Interim Division Director of the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep (PACCS) Medicine, the Associate Director of the Critical Care Signature Program. Since last promotion I have been involved in the creation, evolution and oversight of a number of clinical programs and activities both personally and in leadership positions. Below is a summary of these activities since my last promotion. For Details see “Service Activities” Narrative

Practice Quality Improvement

EMR Rollout, EMR Decision Support - I have served the health system in multiple roles related to Information Technology. Included are several different roles in the recent inpatient IHIS rollout, ongoing roles in IHIS management/optimization and chairing a committee on Decision Support to help shape the current and future functions of IHIS.

8ICU Development - I was responsible for the creation; design and development of the 8ICU, a unique nurse practioner (NP) run ICU. It has grown from an initial 4 bed ICU to a 14 bed ICU with greater than 90% utilization over the last 10 years, resulting in a significant increase in MICU capacity at OSU (an increase of 56%). This model was subsequently used to develop the NSICU at OSU and is now being expanded upon to open the ICU beds in the new tower.

Lung Center Development - I was also responsible for developing the PACCS Lung Center, an off campus ambulatory site developed for the care of patients with pulmonary, allergy and sleep disorders. This development allowed us to grow in a more patient centered outpatient facility with improved patient access. I was responsible for identifying potential locations, developing architectural plans and implementing our move to Morehouse Plaza.

Marysville/Memorial Hospital of Union County Strategic Initiative - More recently I have been responsible for beginning a strategic initiative in conjunction with the health system to provide desired inpatient pulmonary and critical care services to the Marysville, Ohio community (I am providing 40 of 52 weeks personally) at Memorial Hospital of Union County (MHUC). While metrics are not complete, initial data indicates an increase in transfers to OSU worth 2 million dollars a quarter since I started at MHUC.

Critical Care Signature Program Development/Critical Care Tower Development - I was part of the group that initialed conceived and created the plan for the Signature Program in Critical Care. I was responsible for creating the initial care model plan for the signature program and very involved in the clinical budget development for the signature program. I have been the primary critical care physician involved in the design of the new critical care tower, the utilization of the space, the initial design of workflow and specifications for equipment, storage, space and IT requirements.

Practice Development and Growth

Leadership Role in expanding Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Clinical Activity - During my time as clinical director for PACCS, the division has expanded its focus from a general pulmonary/critical care practice to a sub-specialty based pulmonary clinical program and has added allergy and sleep medicine to our organization. The division now has sub-specialty programs in asthma, COPD, pulmonary hypertension, interstitial lung disease (ILD), interventional pulmonology, lung transplant, lung cancer, sarcoidosis, allergy, immunology and sleep medicine.

TeleICU/Critical Care Outreach - After the success of the Memorial Hospital of Union County strategic initiative I am now involved in testing, designing and piloting the use of remote tools for patient care of the critically ill patient in order to leverage physician resources to provide care to outreach locations. I am part of a small taskforce now exploring plans on how to roll out this technology and critical care expertise to outreach hospitals in the community.

Practice Awards - I have been on the Best Doctors in America ® list annually since 2005.

Professional Clinical Education Efforts - I have been involved in curriculum development and professional clinical education primarily in the subject area of Practice Management/Coding/Billing largely in association with national/international professional societies.

Leadership (Internal/External) positions

Vice Chair, Department of Internal Medicine - Duties have largely been functional day-to-day type activities with a focus on capacity management, triage, oversight of the department’s moonlighting activity and trouble shooting on a day-to-day basis.

Clinical Director, Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine - Responsible for all day to day clinical activities, clinical strategic planning, and clinical program development for the PACCS Medicine Division in the Department of Medicine.

Division Director (Interim), Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine - I functioned as the Division Director for the PACCS Medicine division on an interim basis for 51 months. As such I was responsible for the clinical, academic and educational activities of a 4 medical specialty, 50 faculty division.

Associate Director Center for Critical Care, Clinical Affairs (Signature Program) - In that role I was responsible for the clinical activities of the signature program.

Chair, Critical Care Quality Management Committee (Health System) - I have been the chair of Critical Care Quality Management Committee (CCQMC) for the OSU Health System. This committee has focused on quality metrics that are common to all ICUs across the health system. Projects have included creation and on-going programs in Ventilator Associated Pneumonia, ventilation in ARDS, ERT and Code Blue.

National Leadership - American Thoracic Society/American College of Chest Physicians/ AMA-CPT - Since moving to a clinical administration role my primary source of scholarship has been through the scholarship of integration and application related to my role as the American Thoracic Society (ATS) Advisor to the AMA CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) Editorial Panel and my participation in the Clinical Practice Committee of the ATS and the Practice Management Committee of the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP). These committees oversaw society efforts related to payment policy, practice management and the business of clinical practice for the national pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine community. I represent the ATS (for the last 10 years) as an Advisor to the CPT Editorial Panel (1 of 2 pulmonary/critical care physicians in the country). The two of us along with a small number of other pulmonary/critical care physicians (6-8) assess the need for services for the pulmonary, critical care and sleep community, create the language and application for CPT code, present and lobby for each application at quarterly meetings. This same group also participates in the process (Relative Value Unit Change or RUC) where new or modified codes are assessed for valuation through a complex process. My role in the CPT process has significant national ramifications and I am involved in the creation of codes for procedures and processes that benefit the pulmonary and critical care community nationally. For details about CPT please see APPENDIX A.
