Associate Professor-Clinical, Pulm,Allergy,Crit Care & Sleep
Dr. Rami Khayat is an Associate Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine and Director of The Ohio State University Sleep Heart Program. He graduated with Honors from Tichreen University in Syria. He received residency training in Internal Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. He received fellowship training in Pulmonary and Critical Medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Afterwards, he underwent post-doctorate training in respiratory neurobiology and Sleep medicine from University of Wisconsin.
He started at OSU as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine in August of 2003. In October of 2009, he was promoted to Associate Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine.
Dr. Khayat runs a nationally recognized and pioneering integrative clinical program in the management of Sleep Disordered Breathing in patients with cardiovascular diseases and heart failure. This program is based at the Ohio State University Heart and Vascular Center. While maintaining busy clinical practice, he has published numerous original research papers in the mechanism of vascular disease in sleep apnea and the consequences of sleep disordered breathing in heart failure.
Sleep medicine and critical care medicine
Continuing Medical Education:
Sleep disordered breathing and cardiovascular disease:
Invitations to present in national and international venues have increased since 2010. I recently presented in a conference in Japan and was invited to a seminar in a prestigious university in Japan. In September, I will present again at the Heart failure Society of America. Other invitations are listed in the relevant “invited presentations” section.
Sleep Heart fellowship:
This is a novel educational program that targets cardiologists, sleep specialists, clinicians in the area of sleep medicine and heart failure, along with sleep laboratory technicians and administrators. The mission of this program is to disseminate knowledge of the cardiovascular consequences of sleep disordered breathing; educate practitioners about the new methods and technologies in diagnosis and treatment of sleep disordered breathing; and to introduce new care algorithms to the field of sleep medicine and cardiovascular diseases. This fellowship is communicating to clinicians in the area of cardiology and sleep medicine the novel care algorithms developed in the Ross Heart hospital, Ross Ambulatory Care Area, Cardiology subspecialties (including electrophysiology and heart failure) interest in future sessions.
Other relevant CME symposia and conferences with major involvement:
Selected CME areas and activities up to 2010 is listed below and invitations to speak in corresponding national venues are listed separately in the “Invited Presentations” section.
Chronic critical illness: I created and directed this event which focuses on a novel area that is rarely addressed in the critical care literature. This is the chronic critical illness phase. Over 100 attendees mostly physicians from Ohio were present.
Wound healing and OSA: June 2008, San Diego: Wound healing society international conference: OSA prevalence and risk factors in patients with chronic non-healing wounds

Robert Dohar: OSU Bilogy major; currently participating in research in our group and earning research credit. he is preparing an abstract (2013)
1- Monica Roy,MPH: I advised Monica between 2004-2006. I supervised an independent study course for Monica. I mentored here in preparing and presenting an abstract in a national meeting, and subsequently in becoming a co-author in a peer reviewed publication. Monica is a successful optometry student with well established focus on clinical research. She oversaw clinical research projects sponsored by major industry leaders while attending her optometry school
2- Brian Patt, Masters of public health student: I mentored Brian 2008-2012. Brian successfully presented 4 abstracts in national and international meetings. He won a regional award for a poster presentation in Ocotber/2008. he has given several national and international presentations and co-authored several peer reviewed papers.
1- Michael Powers: MPH stduent; Michael co-authored a peer reviewed article, won a research travel award and is pursuing honors program in internal medicine. I served as an overall career advisor for Michael. Additionally, he is preparing his first manuscript as a first author with me.
2- Raymond Pongonis II: Pogie co-authored a peer review article under my supervision. He is currently an internal medicine resident at Northwestern University.
3- Liu, Qihui (Joanna): Joanna submitted a Roessler grant propasal which was reviewed positively.
Robin Trupp: Robin performed the research for her thesis under my supervision. She submitted a manuscript of her findings and already has several peer reviewed articles. She is a nationally recognized leader of nursing education
