Current OSU Appointments

Assistant Professor-Clinical, Pulm,Allergy,Crit Care & Sleep

Physician, FGP-Pulm-Allrgy-CritCare-Sleep

Biographical

I am currently an assistant professor of clinical Internal Medicine in the division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine (PACCS). My interests are in the area of teaching. My major areas of clinical emphasis are interstitial lung diseases and pulmonary function testing. My contributions to the major missions of the College of Medicine and the University are as outlined below:

EDUCATION.

I have been involved with education in various aspects of patient care and at all levels of training. This includes medical students, residents and PACCS fellows in the inpatient and outpatient settings as well as didactic lectures. I am also involved with procedural training for the PACCS fellows as well as advanced bronchoscopic techniques and interventional pulmonology (IP) procedures during the year with the IP fellow.

As part of this educational involvement, I am involved with curriculum development as a member of the Core Faculty for the Sleep Medicine Fellowship and as the Associate Director of the IP Fellowship program. I have also developed and taught a weekly pulmonary physical exam session (Pulmonary Professor Rounds) for 3rd year medical students during IM rotation for the past year and this has been incorporated into the new medical school curriculum as a lecture/demonstration session.

At the end of each academic year, the PACCS fellows select an individual faculty member for recognition of outstanding efforts in fellowship education. I received this award in 2004 and 2009. In addition, I received the Internal Medicine student Education Programs Excellence in Teaching Award in 2010.

I have given lectures and led hands-on sessions at several basic and interventional bronchoscopy courses at OSU with faculty and participants from throughout the United States. I have given several clinical educational presentations as part of the MedNet series and the Society for Interventional Radiology educational series. Both of these series are broadcast nationally. The MedNet series is available on YouTube and my video on Interstitial Lung Diseases has been the most viewed video. I have also supervised fellows’ clinical presentations and been a moderator and facilitator for sessions at the major international pulmonary conferences of the American Thoracic Society and the American College of Chest Physicians. In addition, I am member of the Assembly on Clinical Problems Program Planning Committee for the American Thoracic Society International Conference for 2013-2014 and was a member in 2012-2013. This committee is responsible for organizing the educational program of the Clinical Problems Assembly for the International Conference. This includes review and planning of clinical topics, clinical workshops, evening/preconference/postgraduate sessions and also the review, organization and presentation of close to 1,000 abstracts for the annual international conference.

SERVICE/ADMINISTRATION.

My current clinical duties include inpatient and outpatient patient care as well as procedural responsibilities. My inpatient service commitment is 5 months (10 clinical service blocks) this year (2012-2013). This includes service in the MICU/8ICU and the Pulmonary/Critical Care consult services at OSU East. In the outpatient setting, I currently have two ½ day clinics per week (Interstitial Lung Diseases and Sleep Medicine). I also perform bronchoscopic and interventional pulmonology procedures and am one of three faculty members performing interventional pulmonology/advanced bronchoscopy procedures. At a divisional level, I am also on the Division’s finance committee and have been a member of the Division’s Oversight committee.

The major focus of my administrative service activities have been related to my role as the Medical Director of the Pulmonary Diagnostics Lab. This includes efforts in all of the mission areas of patient care, education and research. Over the past few years, this has included improvements in the availability and scope of procedures offered in both pulmonary function testing as well as interventional pulmonology. The lab has expanded to 4 sites and performs about 1900 bronchoscopic procedures and over 9,000 pulmonary function testing procedures a year. Interventional pulmonology procedures include all types of biopsies, endobronchial ultrasound, tunneled pleural catheters, and recent additions include electromagnetic navigational bronchoscopy, bronchoscopic confocal endomicroscopy and bronchial thermoplasty. Quality and process improvements include the addition of nursing support for bronchoscopic procedures, a dedicated recovery area, upgrade of the computer software system used for bronchoscopy, on-site Pathology support for biopsy interpretation and Anesthesia support for difficult airway or sedation cases. The Pulmonary Diagnostics Lab is also involved in the teaching of PACCS fellows, OSU nursing students and respiratory therapy students from OSU and from Columbus State.

At a national level, I have been selected to the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) Pulmonary Physiology, Function and Rehabilitation NetWork‘s National Steering Committee. This group helps in planning the annual national conference as well as developing policies, opinions, and position statements relating to pulmonary physiology and pulmonary function testing for the ACCP.

SCHOLARLY ACTIVITY.

My areas of scholarly activity focus are predominately in the area of interstitial lung diseases (ILDs). I was involved with basic science research in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) initially but now am more involved with clinical trials and clinical research. I am working on continuing the ILD Registry to be used to track patient demographics, clinical characteristics, and clinical care/outcomes and incorporate this with molecular and other basic science studies from patients over the course of their disease. As there is no effective therapy for IPF outside of lung transplant, clinical trials are an important opportunity for enhancing our understanding of these diseases and are a valuable (and often the only) treatment option for our patients. We have completed multiple clinical trials at OSU, including the largest studies with gamma-interferon and pirfenidone, where our site was one of the largest recruiting sites in both studies. We currently have four studies ongoing.

As there is much overlap between the causes of ILDs and pulmonary hypertension, I am also involved with clinical therapeutic studies in pulmonary hypertension. I was also involved with a novel study of the role of nicotine receptor in patients with Sarcoidosis, who are also seen in the Interstitial Lung Disease Clinic. This was funded through the American Thoracic Society and resulted in publication of the results in the journal Chest. I am also involved with a multidisciplinary study involving members of Radiology and Electrical Engineering to investigate the efficacy of CT scan signal processing techniques in determining progression of interstitial lung diseases.
