Current OSU Appointments

Associate Professor-Clinical, Pulm,Allergy,Crit Care & Sleep

Physician, FGP-Pulm-Allrgy-CritCare-Sleep

Biographical

My contributions to the major missions of the College of medicine and the University are as follows:

1) Research – My research focus has been on pulmonary complications associated with bone marrow transplantation. I have established over the last 8 years a large database and specimen repository from patients that have undergone transplant. We have 350 patients in this study so far and we have quality of life, pulmonary function test, and outcomes data as well as blood samples from many timepoints. This will be an invaluable resource for future publications. I have been participating in a graft versus host disease multispecialty bone marrow transplantation clinic since August 2013. This will increase clinical research opportunities. Also I am going to be the PI at OSU for a BMT chronic graft versus host disease network study looking at treatment options for pulmonary GVHD. I have been active in our division’s research as Associate Director of Pulmonary / Critical Care Translational Research core. In this role I have worked with the information warehouse to develop databases for multiple research programs in the division. I have submitted 19 peer-reviewed journal articles and 8 editor-reviewed review articles.

I was externally funded from 2005 – 2010 with a K08 grant entitled Lung alloimmunity after bone marrow transplantation. Since then I have submitted 2 grants, one on Heat Shock Protein 27 and Bronchiolitis Obliterans after Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant which was unfunded ) Co-I: Andrea Doseff PhD. And I submitted a research grant “Azithromycin for the treatment of Bronchiolitis obliterans”. It was selected for inclusion in the first Rediscovery Research Model Portfolio but never funded. I was asked to serve as discussion facilitator for a thematic poster discussion session on the immune system at ATS 2011. I have been asked to review 2 international grants including one from Canada on bronchiolitis Obliterans Syndrome (which is my major clinical and research interest).

2) Education – In 2011 I won a teaching award from the Pulmonary and Critical Care fellows. I work with fellows regularly and supervise 1-2 fellows each week in my outpatient clinic as well as during all clinical rotations. I give about 6-8 one hour lectures a year to the pulmonary and sleep fellows. For the residents I have recently taken over as the core liason representative from the pulmonary division to the Internal Medicine Residency. In this role I schedule speakers and topics from the pulmonary and critical care division for the resident’s regular conference block. In addition I make the schedule for the residents when they do an outpatient pulmonary / sleep elective. This year I participated in 2 morning reports for the residents. I participated in a residency communications workshop on the topic “obtaining informed consent for blood product transfusions” on May 8, 2012. I have participated as a mentor in the Clinical Assessment and Problem Solving (CAPS I) medical student program for the last two years. In this program a first year / second year student attends my clinic for ½ day a month for one year. I regularly participate in the Med 2 pulmonary block giving the chronic cough lecture and participating in small group sessions. Outside the College of Medicine, I am on a doctoral student committee for an Anatomic Pathology Resident, Veterinary Biosciences Graduate Student.

At a national level I have given two ‘sunrise seminar’ talks at the ATS meeting in 2005 and 2006 on pulmonary complications of bone marrow transplantation. These are competitive selected talks with an international audience. I have given two mednet talks here at OSU on pulmonary function testing and chronic cough. MedNet is broadcast online nationally.

3) Service / Administration – The largest component of my administrative service is in my role as medical director for our division’s outpatient clinic - The Lung Center. This facility has 16 exam rooms for over 25 faculty. We have the outpatient pulmonary, sleep and allergy programs at this site. I took over this role in 2007 and in the last 5-6 years, we have expanded significantly, adding the sleep clinic and additional faculty and staff with increased patient visits. We have 33 full time administrative and nursing staff. As part of this position, I have tried to increase the national recognition of the PACCS division with the development of the website for developed and maintain the website for The Lung Center. The url is http://lungcenter.osu.edu. This website has over 2000 visits each month and has been visited from computers in over 40 of the states in the US, and we have had visits from other countries such as the United Kingdom, India, Australia just to name a few. 84.83% of our visits are new visitors.

In addition to that I supervised the "go-live' for the pulmonary division during the implementation of IHIS, the electronic medical records application in 2009. I am the EPIC lead physician for the Pulmonary Division in the Department of Medicine. Also, I am the Assistant Director of the Pulmonary Diagnostics Laboratory for the Ohio State University. In this role I help oversee the pulmonary function laboratory at The Ohio State University. In the division I am on the pulmonary fellowship committee as well as the interventional fellowship committee. Additionally, I am listed in America’s best doctors 2007 – 2011. For the last few years, I have been only one of three physicians in our division performing endobronchial ultrasound guided biopsies.

At a national level, I am also active in our two major pulmonary organizations, the American Thoracic Society (ATS) and the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP). In the ACCP I am a member of the Clinical Pulmonary Medicine NetWork Steering Committee since October 2011. This term will continue until October 2015. As part of this role we have regular conference calls and a NetWork meeting each year at the National Conference. On this committee, we decide the programing content for Clinical Pulmonary Medicine at the Annual Assembly. In the ATS I am an active member of the Membership Committee of the Allergy, Immunology and Inflammation (AII) assembly. As part of this committee we have scheduled conference calls throughout the year, we pick the speaker for the AII dinner at the annual international assembly, and last year we organized a mentorship program available through the AII. Additionally at a national / international level. I have served as an ad-hoc reviewer for 13 medical journals (most of which are pulmonary or cancer / bone marrow transplant related).
