Assistant Professor-Clinical, Pulm,Allergy,Crit Care & Sleep
I precept 2-3 sleep fellows annually in weekly clinic as well as at the sleep lab ensuring their core competency and mentoring them on career development.
I have served as a research advisor for several fellows throughout the past years helping them to prepare, submit and revise manuscripts.
I have served as a advisor for national involvement for both pulmonary and sleep medicine fellows. I have successfully taught them how to create and submit a curriculum based on a gap analysis to international meetings.
I am the director of the sleep medicine journal club and advise, students, residents and fellows to critically review the literature.
I am currently an Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine. I am the Assistant Director of the Sleep Medicine Program at the Ohio State University (OSU) and Director of the Home Sleep Testing Program at OSU. After graduating from the University of Michigan with honors with a degree in chemical engineering, I pursued my doctorate of medicine at the University of Virginia and subsequent training in internal medicine, pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine at the University of North Carolina.
Teaching and Mentoring
I have established a national reputation and have been invited to give numerous national and international educational talks and to be faculty at international post graduate courses. I served on the Sleep Network Steering Committee of the American Academy of Chest Physicians (ACCP) which is one of the premier international societies for pulmonologists, sleep specialists. The Sleep Network Steering Committee is responsible for developing and scoring all of the submitted sleep medicine sessions that are presented at the annual international meeting. In 2014, I was elected to a 6 year leadership within the ACCP. This role includes 2 years as Vice Chair, 2 years of Chair, and 2 years of Chair Ex-Officio of the Sleep Network Steering Committee.
I have been proactive in sleep medicine education at all levels. I teach numerous continuing medical education courses for physician faculty as well as other health professionals. I have been invited to develop educational programming by societies for physicians, dentists, respiratory therapists, nurse practitioners and sleep technologists reaching participants throughout the Midwest. I am integral on the Sleep Medicine Fellowship Education Committee and teach a significant proportion of the didactics to the sleep fellows. I regularly precept medical students in my clinic. I have created an innovative program where I go to the undergraduate residence halls and educate undergraduates at OSU the importance of adequate sleep for their education and tips on how to optimize their sleep. Finally, I have given lectures to patient support groups on the importance of adequate sleep and comorbid disease as well as given numerous interviews which reached national exposure including media outlets such as Dateline, MSN.com, Huffington Post and MSNBC.
In late 2008, I joined the faculty and pursued a research and clinical interest in sleep disordered breathing in the context of weight loss surgery. This has led to funding, international presentations, and national awareness. I have published sixteen scholarly works including one edited book, five book chapters, three review articles, five peer-reviewed journal articles, and two editor-reviewed articles, while on faculty at OSU (maiden name = Amar )
I was invited to contribute to nationally funded educational products. I was a contributor and section editor to two separate editions of "ICU Recall." The "Recall" series of books are popular educational tools used by medical students nationally when in various clinical rotations. I was also invited to be one of the contributing authors to "SEEK" which is one of the primary board review tools used by pulmonologists and sleep specialists to prepare for their specialty boards. This board review series is analogous to MKSAP for internal medicine or ABSITE for general surgery.
In addition to my national leadership role within the ACCP, I contributed to the medical center more locally. I am the current Assistant Director of The OSU Sleep Medicine Program. I was co-responsible for directing an effort to achieve American Academy of Sleep Medicine accreditation for our entire sleep program at OSU which we successfully renewed in 2013.
I am the Director of the Home Sleep Testing Program at OSU which I started in 2012. We have grown from averaging 4 home sleep tests per week in 2010 to scheduling 24 home sleep tests per week in 2015. This program is a lucrative clinical program for the medical center.
I have worked with the Department of Anesthesiology to develop the guidelines for perioperative care of patients at risk for sleep disordered breathing. In doing so, we have incorporated home sleep testing to quickly identify those at higher perioperative risk requiring additional care. Additionally, I was on a taskforce working with the Department of Respiratory Therapy to create protocols for the use of perioperative auto-titrating CPAP for patients in need.
