With much of the nation's attention focused on the future of health care in the country, many health-care leaders will be in Columbus this week to discuss one growing segment of that future: personalized medicine. Today and Friday, more than 200 representatives from the health-care industry, government, academia and consumer and patient advocacy groups are expected to convene at The Ohio State University's Biomedical Research Tower to hear from national leaders to talk about topics such as using a person's genes to determine his or her susceptibility to disease or tailoring treatment for disease and ailments. Personalized health care is a burgeoning industry and this week's conference is one of only a few of its kind held in the U.S. Last year's event was the first held at OSU. This year, with the backdrop of a national debate on health care, the event is even more relevant, said Clay Marsh, senior associate vice president for research in the OSU Office of Health Sciences, vice dean for research in the College of Medicine and executive director of the OSU Center for Personalized Health Care. OSU remains on the forefront of personalized medicine, he added. In fact it was announced this week that researchers at The Ohio State University Medical Center are partnering with one of the world's most prestigious and leading biomedical research institutions, to provide personal genetic information to more than 100,000 people. Ohio State's Medical Center and the Coriell Institute for Medical Research, home of the world's leading biobank resource for human cells and DNA, announced their partnership in the Coriell Personalized Medicine Collaborative.
