Christopher Baran, PhD is a Research Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine. He is also an Associate Investigator of the Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute.
Chris joined the faculty at The Ohio State University as a Research Scientist in 2006 and as a Research Assistant Professor in 2009. He currently maintains an R03 grant that is funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and is the director of the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine’s bi-weekly Research Conference.
Education :
B.A., Chemistry and Business ,Washington and Jefferson College, 1997
PhD, Biochemistry, The Ohio State University, 2003
Mentor: Clay Marsh, MD
Research Interests:
The function of macrophages, fibrocytes, and myofibroblasts in the development of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is the central theme of Dr. Baran’s research. He is currently studying the importance of the transcription factor ets-2 in the expression of type-I collagen, alpha smooth muscle actin (?SMA), and connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) in fibrotic lung disease and the activation of ets-2 and its role in the pathogenesis of IPF. His research has been expanded to include the study of ets-2 in the maturation, differentiation, and proliferation of myofibroblasts and the role of the inositol phosphatase PTEN in regulation myofibroblast functions. Through his collaborative efforts within the Division, Dr. Baran also has an interest in translational research in the fields of exercise-induced bronchospasm, lung transplantation, and pulmonary hypertension. Recent studies have highlighted the possibilities of targeting ets-2 in the treatment of IPF.
