At the Forefront of Improved Care

The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine includes 40 faculty and 16 fellows. Working together, our mission is to:

  • Provide the highest level of state-of-the-art teaching in pulmonary medicine and pulmonary science to the clinical, scientific and University communities;
  • Provide the highest quality of compassionate, state-of-the-art and cost-effective medical care; and
  • Become a national and international center for cutting edge, creative research which has the potential for making major impacts on health and medical science.

Our faculty and fellows strive to achieve this through an expansive and innovative clinical, teaching and research environment within The Ohio State University Medical Center. A 923-licensed bed complex, the OSU Medical Center includes University Hospital, OSU Hospital East, the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute and in fall 2004, the new 212,300-square-foot Richard M. Ross Heart Hospital.

We invite you to explore the following pages to see how the Division can meet your needs.

Patient Care.

The division has sole responsibility for the care of patients in the state-of-the-art Medical Intensive Care Unit at University Hospital and also staffs a pulmonary/critical care consultation service at University Hospital and University Hospital East. Patient care includes a broad range of outpatient services, including outpatient clinics in general pulmonary medicine as well as subspecialties within the field, among them asthma, interstitial lung diseases, emphysema, pulmonary hypertension, sleep disorders and lung transplantation. We also offer a full spectrum of pulmonary function, exercise, and bronchoprovocation testing and perform all aspects of diagnostic and interventional bronchoscopy. Patient education plays an important role in our pulmonary rehabilitation program. Click here to explore our services.

Education.

The Division offers an innovative 36-month clinical inpatient and outpatient training and research environment for pulmonary and critical care fellows. The program is designed to educate physicians for careers in academic medicine, either in a clinical/teaching or in a basic research position. Fellows are exposed to a wide spectrum of pulmonary and critical care illnesses in the Medical Intensive Care Unit and the Pulmonary Consult service. Paired with a faculty mentor, fellows also learn laboratory techniques as well as critical evaluation skills. Click here to learn more…

Research.

As part of our commitment to clinical and basic science research, the division is one of 18 centers that participate in the National Emphysema Treatment Trial (NETT). We also conduct a number of other clinical trials in areas such as asthma, adult respiratory distress syndrome, emphysema and HIV-associated lung disease. Faculty members are funded through the National Institutes of Health and pursue a wide range areas of research including ARDS and multi-organ failure, acute and chronic lung injury and the role of cytokines and oxidant injury, mitochondrial dysfunction and the role of monocytes/macrophages in health and disease states. The Dorothy M. Davis Heart & Lung Institute represents a collaborative research initiative between the Division and the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, and is the centerpiece of our future research programs.
