Research Interests

Focus/Project 1: One goal of our laboratory is to elucidate the role of recently discovered microRNAs in lung tumor development and progression. We are approaching this through analysis in primary human lung cancers and peripheral blood complemented by allied studies that examine the effects of selective microRNA targeting on cancer cell phenotype.

Focus/Project 2: Our laboratory has been very interested in increasing our understanding of the molecular heterogeneity that exist in lung cancer by utilizing genomic and proteomic platforms coupled with computational modeling. By applying systems biology to human samples, we may identify perturbations of key biological networks that are critical to tumor development and progression.

Focus/Project 3: Another area of interest is examining the role of prostaglandins on endothelial survival in tobacco related lung disease. We recently made the observations that components of the cyclo-oxygenase pathway have either protective or detrimental effects on the pulmonary vasculature in diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and lung cancer. We are using a murine model of lung specific prostacyclin over-expression with both short and long term cigarette smoke exposure to examine the mechanisms by which this molecule may confer protection to the pulmonary vasculature and epithelium.
