Magazine recognizes OSU Medical Center in 9 specialties

COLUMBUS, Ohio

7/02/2004

Nine medical specialties at The Ohio State University Medical Center are recognized in the current issue of U.S. News & World Report as being among the best in the country. This is the second time in the magazine’s 15-year history of publishing “America’s Best Hospitals” that Ohio State has been recognized for expertise in as many as nine specialty areas. Annually, only a small number of the surveyed hospitals excel by being listed in multiple specialties.

The “America’s Best Hospitals” issue, considered by many consumers and health care industry analysts as a leading indicator of quality care and performance, is compiled using data collected annually from more than 6,000 U.S. medical centers. This year, data were collected for 17 medical specialties and only 177 hospitals were included in the final lists.

OSU Medical Center programs recognized as being among the best in the country are: cancer, gynecology, hormonal, kidney disease, neurology/neurosurgery, respiratory, rehabilitation, urology, and ears, nose and throat.

Dr. Fred Sanfilippo, senior vice president and executive dean for health sciences, dean of the College of Medicine and Public Health, and CEO of OSU Medical Center, says recognition in nine specialty areas helps to demonstrate the skill of faculty and staff members and the institution’s overall focus on patient outcomes.

“There is considerable prestige associated with being recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of America’s best hospitals, and each of our employees deserves a share of this accomplishment,” said Sanfilippo.

To help bolster its stature among leading academic medical centers, Ohio State has been augmenting medical programs and services with talented clinicians and scientists recruited from other prominent institutions. In addition, an increased commitment to promising research has placed Ohio State in the forefront of technology-driven medical programs.

“We’re on a course to make Ohio State one of the finest academic medical centers in the country, and it is gratifying to see this effort and commitment acknowledged once again in the data collected by U.S. News &World Report,” added Sanfilippo.

Hospitals selected for the magazine’s rankings are institutions of varying sizes around the country. Measurements such as mortality data, staffing levels, reputation and technology are used to compile the final lists.

The “America’s Best Hospitals” survey is in the July 12 issue, which appears on newsstands next week.

At OSU Medical Center, health and medical care is provided to patients by OSU Hospital, The James Cancer Hospital, University Hospital East, OSU Harding Hospital, and at more than 35 primary and specialty care sites throughout central Ohio. In August, the Richard M. Ross Heart Hospital will open on the medical center campus.
