Dr. Meena Khan, MD, Asst. Program Director and Dr. Ahmed Bhatti, MD, Sleep Fellow
Academic/Clinical Experience
The Sleep Medicine Fellowship is a one year ACGME accredited program. Our program provides a well rounded clinical experience as well as the opportunity to participate in research. We have a 14 bed accredited sleep center and a sleep department that is growing in faculty and staff. There are multiple sleep clinics where the fellow will be exposed to an abundance of sleep patients with a variety of sleep complaints.
We have sleep clinics in 4 different locations. Our faculty consists of 7 physicians whose practice is devoted to sleep medicine and numerous other faculty who see sleep patients as part of their practice and participate in our program. Since we are an academic center, we see a diverse patient population with referrals from many different specialties within our institution as well as patients from community practices. We see an entire spectrum of sleep disorders including but not limited to obstructive sleep apnea, central sleep apnea, narcolepsy, hypersomnia, odd behavior in sleep, parasomnia, periodic limb movements of sleep, restless leg syndrome, and insomnia. The fellow will spend most of his/her time seeing patients in the sleep clinic and interpreting diagnostic polysomnograms, MSLT, MWT, titration studies and actigraphy. Case conferences and lectures pertaining to sleep medicine are conducted weekly.
The fellow also spends 2 months at Nationwide Children’s Hospital Sleep Center where he/she will attend pediatric sleep clinics and interpret pediatric polysomnograms with the pediatric sleep specialists. The faculty consists of those with a background in pulmonary, neurology and psychology. Since it is one of the top Children’s Hospitals in the region, a range of patients are seen from obstructive sleep apnea, narcolepsy, odd behavior in sleep (parasomnias/seizures) and insomnia to children with congenital abnormalities leading to sleep difficulties. There is also exposure to neonates with sleep disordered breathing.
In addition, he/she will have exposure to the fields of neurology(the emphasis will be on neurophysiology), psychiatry, dentistry, and otolaryngology. The purpose of these rotations is to provide exposure with how these areas interact with sleep medicine. The neurology, psychiatry, and dentistry experience is in the form of one month rotations in each specialty. The otolaryngology experience is via an ENT/Sleep clinic that the sleep fellow attends once a month. There is also a research requirement which is explained under the research section of this website. The clinical rotations for the sleep fellow are as follows: 6 months of adult sleep at Ohio State University. 2 months of pediatric sleep at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. 1 month of neurology/research elective 1 month of psychiatry/research elective 1 month of dentistry/research ENT/Sleep clinic conducted once a month throughout the year 1 research month
Conferences / Education
The month of July will be devoted to lectures on introduction to sleep medicine and learning to interpret polysomnograms, titration studies, MSLT, and MWT via sessions with our sleep faculty.
Starting from August through the rest of the year, there will be a one hour case conference followed by a one hour lecture every week pertaining to sleep medicine.
There is also a monthly Journal Club and a monthly research conference.

Research
The fellow will be expected to participate in either clinical or bench research. The research can be a new project or participation in an existing project in an area of his/her interest. The research should be pursued with the expectation of publication. Exposure to faculty conducting research will be given in the beginning of the year so that the fellow can pick a mentor. Time will be given during elective months to work on the chosen project.
