At The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC–James), we put patient safety at the forefront. We believe that patient involvement is critical to the success of our quality efforts and so we invite patients and their families to engage in our quality efforts. Patients are also involved in process improvement teams and focus groups, and they provide much needed insight into the unique needs and concerns of the oncology population.
The OSUCCC–James also focuses intense efforts on the National Patient Safety Goals and Joint Commission Accreditation Standards. Effective hand hygiene, patient identification and universal precautions are adhered at The OSUCCC–James and, therefore, require 100% compliance for all staff, students and medical staff. Other initiatives include improving communication and collaboration so that patients are fully aware of the latest technological advances and options for clinical trials at The OSUCCC–James.
The OSUCCC–James has recently been acknowledged as one of the safest and most effective hospitals in the country, according to Leapfrog’s 2009 review. More than 1,200 hospitals across the country are involved in the Leapfrog project and are voluntarily evaluated on criteria such as the use of computerized physician order entry, intensive-care unit staffing and adherence to high performance standards for complex procedures. No other Ohio hospitals are on the list.
We also ask patients at the OSUCCC–James their opinion of our services through Press Ganey surveys. The information from the survey results allows us to assess areas of strength and areas of opportunity for improvement. The following inpatient survey results cover the three-month period from July 2009 through September 2009:
• 91% of patients stated that their overall experience was very good/good
• 95.6% of patients indicated that their overall nursing care was very good/good
• 94.2% of patients stated that their overall physician care was very good/good
• 94.2% of patients indicated that care related to personal issues was very good/good
• 96.9% of patients would recommend The James to others
