COLUMBUS, Ohio – Drs. Maria Lucarelli (43201), Catherine Lucey (43221) and David Wininger (43235), physicians at the Ohio State University Medical Center, were recently presenters at the annual spring meeting of the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine in San Diego.

Lucarelli, of the division of pulmonary, critical care, allergy and sleep medicine; Lucey, of the department of internal medicine; and Wininger, of the department of infectious diseases at OSU Medical Center, recreated critical incidents, simulating realistic scenarios where multidisciplinary teams can focus on error identification, team building and crisis communication in a low-stakes environment. The exercise focused on ways to incorporate simulation-based training and demonstrated ways to complement individualized training with a team-based approach, while identifying opportunities for intervention using educational strategies.

The Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine, with a membership of over 1,800 from 400 international institutions, is a professional and educational organization of accredited internal medicine residency programs.
