Inpatient Ward and Consultation Services

Patients with potential infections are admitted for inpatient care from the emergency department, OSU Clinics, the Central Ohio community and an expansive regional referral base. These services use a team care approach and sub-specialty expertise through inpatient ward service and consultation.

Inpatient Ward Service

Infectious Diseases Ward Service patients are admitted to Rhodes or Doan Halls, and are cared for by an Infectious Diseases attending physician as part of a teaching service with Internal Medicine residents and OSU medical students. The distribution of patient problems typically is 75% general infectious diseases, 25% HIV-related problems, with a varying percentage of general internal medicine issues.

Inpatient Consultation

The Infectious Diseases Consultative Service is made up of a team of providers that includes an Infectious Diseases attending physician, one or more infectious diseases fellows, and varying numbers of residents and students. Unique sources of consults include transplantation services for bone marrow, heart, lung, liver, kidney and pancreas; busy surgical, medical, and cardiac intensive care units, a neurosurgical step-down unit, and the large number of immunocompromised cancer patients. Each encounter is an educational opportunity for consult team members and the patient.
