Larry S. Schlesinger, MD Division Director
Saslaw Professor of Internal Medicine, Professor of Molecular Virology, Immunology, and Medical Genetics and Microbiology N1149 Doan Hall 410 West 10th Avenue Columbus, OH 43210 (614) 293-5671 Larry.Schlesinger@osumc.edu
Dr. Schlesinger joined the faculty in 2002. He is a member of the Integrated Biomedical Graduate Program, and is a recipient of awards from the NIH, American Lung Association, Department of Veterans Affairs, CDC, and DOD for work with M. tuberculosis. He has chaired/served on many study sections and foundation review boards (e.g. NIH, VA, Gates, Wellcome Trust), is past recipient of the ICAAC Young Investigator Award and has served as Chair of the Tuberculosis section for the American Society for Microbiology and the Infectious Diseases Society of America. Special Interests Dr. Schlesinger's clinical interest is in Tuberculosis and Non-tuberculous mycobacterial infections. His research interest is in human mononuclear phagocyte interactions with Mycobacterium tuberculosis and more recently Francisella tularensis. He studies the influence of mycobacterial surface glycolipids on complement activation and binding to phagocytes. He also studies the mechanism of phagocytosis of mycobacteria by macrophages, the interacellular trafficking of mycobacteria, and the regulation of macrophage surface receptors. His recent work focuses on pulmonary models of the innate immune response to mycobacteria (role of surfactant proteins), use of current molecular approaches to making knock-out strains of bacteria, and host susceptibility factors.
