Dr. Azad joined the faculty in the Division of Infectious Diseases in 2008 and is a Research Scientist heading the molecular biology group in the laboratory of Dr. Larry Schlesinger at the Center for Microbial Interface Biology. He was a teaching faculty (Assistant Professor) in the Microbiology Department at the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh and has been a member of the American Society for Microbiology since 1994.

Special Interests

Dr. Azad’s primary research interest is in molecular and cellular factors involved in host-pathogen interactions in TB pathogenesis. Dr. Azad’s studies are directed at understanding the roles of mycobacterial mannosylated surface glycolipids and host cell surface phagocytic receptors in pathogen survival in human macrophages by using the state-of-the-art complementary molecular approaches (e.g. mycobacterial gene knockout and macrophage gene knockdown). He is also interested in population genetics (gene polymorphisms) to study host susceptibility factors for TB.

Education

Fellow: Wellcome Trust, University of Glasgow, UK. 1994

Research Associate: The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH 1995
