Welcome to the Division of Hospital Medicine! What is a Hospitalist? A Hospitalist is a physician whose primary professional focus is the general medical care of hospitalized patients. Their direct activities include patient care, teaching, research, and leadership related to general medicine in the hospital setting. A hospitalist is a medical specialist who provides quality medical treatment to individuals while they are in the hospital while specializing in all aspects of a patient’s care from the time they are admitted until the time they are discharged. Hospitalists are also known to organize the communication between different doctors caring for a patient, and serve as the point of contact for other doctors, nurses, and patients’ families for questions, updates, and delineating a comprehensive plan of care. The main goal of a hospitalist is to provide the best, safest, most efficient care to hospitalized patients. Hospitalist Program at OSU The hospitalist program at OSU started July 2003, in response to patient care needs created by the new work hours restrictions for house staff. By FY05 (July 2004-June 2005) the nascent Division of Hospital Medicine cared for 17% of all Department of Internal Medicine admissions, and it is projected that the number has increased to ~25% of all IM admissions to University Hospital, the Ross Heart Hospital and the James Cancer Hospital this year.
