The hospitalist program at OSU started July 2003, in response to patient care needs created by the new work hours restrictions for house staff.  By FY05 (July 2004-June 2005) the nascent Division of Hospital Medicine cared for 17% of all Department of Internal Medicine admissions, and it is projected that the number has increased to ~25% of all IM admissions to University Hospital, the Ross Heart Hospital and the James Cancer Hospital this year.
