Student/Post-Graduate Rotations

The Division of Human Genetics provides education to and rotations for medical students, residents, fellows, genetic counseling students, as well as undergraduate and high school students interested in genetics.

For OSUMC medical students, teaching begins in the pre-clinical years with lectures and case-based discussions.  During their clinical years, students may take a one-month Human Genetics rotation that offers research as well as clinical opportunities.

Senior Internal Medicine residents have a unique opportunity for an extended three-month genetics rotation. The resident spends two afternoons each week in the Division, one to participate in Family Review, and one to participate in clinic.  Internal Medicine residents may also have research opportunities.

Hematology/Oncology fellows may also take a Human Genetics rotation that offers research as well as clinical opportunities.

We also participate in Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s Genetics Residency Program.  Residents in this program participate in two separate month-long rotations in our Division.  During this rotation, residents see patients in our Clinical Cancer Genetics and Medical Genetics Programs, as well as our multidisciplinary specialty clinics.

The Division also offers clinical rotations for students in Master’s degree genetic counseling programs.  We are a permanent training site for the University of Cincinnati genetic counseling program.  We are also an ad hoc training site for other accredited genetic counseling programs.  The length of students’ rotations varies depending on their program’s requirements.

During the course of their rotation, residents and genetic counseling students are required to give one presentation to the Human Genetics faculty.  Rotators also have the opportunity to participate in tumor boards, genetics journal clubs, and other educational seminars.

Undergraduate students and high school students interested in genetics and genetic counseling may also be provided with opportunities for shadowing and/or volunteering.

All rotations require pre-approval by the Human Genetics Division Director.
