Research Interests
My interest in clinical reasoning began during my fellowship in medical education when I selected this as an area for focused study. Since that time, I have had the opportunity to develop two very progressive curricula in the Integrated Program, called the Capstone Course and the Clinical Analysis and Problem Solving (CAPS) course. The CAPS course became a venue to apply evidence based medicine approach as life-long learning and an understanding of research methodologies in order to develop analysis and problem solving from very early in the medical student curriculum. The Capstone course, implemented in April 2004 and Student Morning Report offered opportunities to explicitly teach reasoning within a clinical context through pattern recognition, problem identification, processing, prioritization, and synthesis to illness scripts. The latter works draw on Dr. Catherine Lucey's previous work in resident education Problem List to Illness Scripts. The Capstone course, despite initial student skepticism, has received extremely positive reviews from both faculty and students, resulting in its adaptation to the Independent Study Program and the College of Optometry. These local innovations have been presented nationally and provide further opportunity for research into how medical students and residents acquire clinical reasoning skills.
