The division faculty are nationally and internationally recognized in various areas of endocrine research. They include Kwame Osei, Dara P. Schuster, Samuel Cataland, Rebecca D. Jackson, Matthew D. Ringel, Lawrence S. Kirschner, Richard T. Kloos, William B. Malarkey, Raheela Khawaja, and Elizabeth Diakoff. (Professor's Emeritus): Ernest L. Mazzaferri, James M. Falko, Jack M. George, Thomas G. Skillman and Manuel Tzagournis. Research areas include diabetes mellitus, transplantation, gastrointestinal hormones, neuroendocrine tumors, prolactin, hyperlipidemia and atherosclerosis, neuroendocrinology/neurohormones and stress, thyroid cancer, MEN syndrome, osteoporosis and nutritional Disorders.
Some large studies recently funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) include the Prevention of Diabetes in African American Program and the Women's Health Initiative. There are opportunities to interact with collaborating basic science faculty as well. The Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism has been recognized in 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, and 2001 by U.S. News & World Report as being in the top 3% of all American hospitals in the specialty of endocrinology.
