Leadership and Management Training Program


Mission: Through direct observation, small group simulations and lectures, the goal of the Leadership and Management Program is to provide residents with opportunities to learn the principles and skills of effective leadership and management, as well as opportunities to deepen their understanding of how these principles and skills might improve patient care.

The Ohio State University Internal Medicine Residency Program believes that a great physician is someone who has excellent patient care skills and exemplary leadership skills. In order to help residents develop all of the skills necessary to be a great physician, we’ve developed the Leadership and Management Training Program.
The intern to resident transition is one of the most difficult in medicine and our intern year course focusses on helping interns develop the skills and knowledge needed to be successful residents. This training is built into 13 sessions aimed at improving skills in four critical domains: communication, awareness, coping with change, development of leadership traits and styles. By the end of intern year, residents will be prepared to take on the role of senior resident. Second and third year courses will prepare residents for the career in medicine and will focus on complex team leadership and management theory, organizational strategic planning theory, conflict resolution and leading through change.


OSU is committed to leading the way in advancing the quality and effectiveness of residency education. As one of the few programs in the country to provide an integrated leadership training curriculum within the residency program, we will continue to provide residents with unique experiences and opportunities that will allow them to become excellent physicians.
