Congratulations to the OSU Wexner Medical Center Pancreatic Disorders Section!

Pancreatic disorders encompass a range of diseases that frequently result in troublesome symptoms and increase the risk for developing decreased functioning of the pancreas (resulting in diabetes and maldigestion), and rarely, cancer.

Acute pancreatitis is the most common gastrointestinal reason for hospitalization in the United States (275,000 admissions in 2009).  On the other hand, pancreatic cancer is a relatively uncommon type of cancer (~40,000 new diagnoses per year), however it is the fourth most common cause of death from cancer.  Managing pancreatic disorders is challenging, and to be effective requires evaluation by a multi-disciplinary team.

At OSU, we have developed a Section of Pancreas Disorders consisting of clinicians and endoscopists with dedicated interests in managing patients with pancreatic diseases.  We are devoted to the comprehensive evaluation and management of all pancreatic disorders, including:

  • Acute pancreatitis
  • Chronic pancreatitis (including autoimmune and hereditary pancreatitis)
  • Pancreatic cysts
  • Known or suspected pancreatic cancer (in a multi-specialty clinic)
  • High Risk Individuals for developing pancreatic cancer (based on family history)
  • Complications of pancreatic diseases (including abdominal pain, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency and pancreatic duct stones)
  • Medical evaluation for Total Pancreatectomy and Autologous Islet Cell Transplant (TPIAT)

The current GHN Pancreas Clinic locations include:

  • Martha Morehouse Medical Plaza (a multi-specialty pancreatic disorders clinic including medical pancreatology, medical oncology, pancreatic surgery, and advanced endoscopy).
  • The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center – Doan Hall
  • Stoneridge Internal Medicine Center

Gastroenterology providers managing pancreatic diseases include:

  • Phil Hart, MD, Medical Director, Section of Pancreatic Disorders
  • Stephanie Jones, CNP; Pancreatic Disorders Clinical Nurse Practitioner
  • Darwin Conwell, MD, MS; Division Director
  • Samer Eldika, MD, MS; Advanced Endoscopy
  • J. Royce Groce, MD, MPH; Medical Director of Endoscopy
