Curriculum
Hepatology Fellows will become acquainted with a wide variety of diagnostic studies, a standardized approach to the treatment of common liver diseases and the implementation of treatment strategies. In addition, the fellow will be involved in the work-up and management of liver transplant candidates and recipients.
Specifically, the fellow will:
- Obtain experience in a variety of acute and chronic liver diseases and develop an efficient diagnostic approach to these patients.

- Develop familiarity with treatments for common complications of liver disease such as ascites, portal hypertension or hepatic encephalopathy.

- Build familiarity with standard treatments of chronic liver diseases such as viral hepatitis, autoimmune liver diseases, metabolic liver diseases, drug induced liver disease, fatty liver disease and liver tumors.

- Perform diagnostic and therapeutic paracentesis.

- Perform and interpret liver biopsies.
|
- Obtain exposure to the selection process regardign patients for liver transplanation.

- Obtain exposure to the diagnosis, treatment, and management of acute and chronic complications post-orthotopic liver transplantation.
| Educational conferences are an integral and routine part of the fellowship. These include liver transplant selection conference, joint liver transplant medicine/surgery rounds, liver cancer multidisciplinary conference and transplant grand rounds. Fellows will also have the opportunity to participate in the liver educational activities of the gastroenterology fellowship such as clinical case conference and journal club.
