Columbus is the largest city and the capital of Ohio. In 2008, Columbus was ranked the 16th largest city in the United States with a population of 754,885 residents. Columbus was also ranked the 32nd largest metropolitan area with a population of about 1.8 million residents, according to the 2008 Census.
Columbus, Ohio is the home of many attractive features including two public colleges, The Ohio State University and Columbus State Community College. The Ohio State University was ranked 18th in the country for the best public university by U.S. News & World Report. The university’s main campus here in Columbus has an attendance of more than 55,000 students and offers 160 undergraduate majors and 240 professional, master and doctorial programs throughout 18 different colleges. An additional 8,200 students attend Ohio State’s regional campuses in Lima, Mansfield, Marion, and Newark, and the Agricultural Technical Institute in Wooster. Also located near Columbus are private colleges such as the Franklin University, Otterbein College in Westerville, and Capital University in Bexley.
Other notable attractions in the Columbus area are the Columbus Museum of Art, the Wexner Center for the Arts, the Greater Columbus Convention Center where various concerts and events are held, the Franklin Park Conservatory which features a botanical garden, the Ohio State Expo Center where the annual Ohio State Fair is held, a large science museum known as the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) and the Columbus Zoo. The city also offers large trendy shopping centers such as Easton Town Center, Polaris Fashion Place and the Mall at Tuttle Crossing and wide variety of restaurants.
Columbus is the home to numerous major and minor league sports teams. Such teams include the Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer, the Columbus Blue Jackets of the National Hockey League and a Triple A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians known as the Columbus Clippers. Columbus also offers various golf courses throughout the city including Jack Nicklaus’ Murifield Village Golf Club which holds the Memorial Tournament annually. Last but not least, the Ohio State Buckeyes are national contenders in football, men and women's basketball, baseball and hockey.
