Clinical Experience
General Dermatology: Various experiences in general dermatology exist for the residents at outpatient clinics precepted by full time and auxiliary faculty members. These include:
- Resident continuity clinics in which the residents are the primary decision makers and have the opportunity to longitudinally follow patients over three years. These are precepted by Dr. Bechtel and Dr. Zirwas.
- VA clinics which are outstanding opportunities for residents to gain experience in the diagnosis and managment of skin cancer and the broad spectrum of general adult dermatology. These are precepted by Dr. Hessel, Dr. DeMaria, and Dr. McKelvey.
- Correctional facility clinic in which residents provide care for incarcerated individuals from throughout the State of Ohio which provides an opportunity for residents to see patients with unusually advanced stages of disease. This clinic is precepted by Dr. Hearne.
- Faculty clinics in which residents assist the faculty in the care of their patients.
Pediatric Dermatology: Board certified pediatric dermatologists, Dr. Patricia Witman and Dr. Joy Mosser, staff pediatric dermatology clinics and pediatric dermatologic surgery clinics. These clinics provide an excellent educational opportunity to learn diagnosis and management of both common and rare pediatric dermatological diseases.
Surgical Dermatology: Residents become proficient in the full spectrum of dermatologic surgery through regularly scheduled clinics staffed by Dr. Lambert (Mohs surgeon) at the James Cancer Martha Morehouse Medical Plaza and the Columbus VA clinic, Dr. Hearne (dermatology surgeon) at our clinic in Dublin and the correctional facility, Dr. Mosser at Children's Hospital and Dr. Kaplanski, a podiatrist with expertise in nail surgery.
Complex Medical Dermatology Clinic: This clinic is conducted twice monthly and is an incredible learning experience. These clinics are staffed by Dr. Bechtel and are designed to prepare residents to become comfortable and knowledgeable in using biologics and immunosuppressive agents in managing a variety of dermatological diseases such as immunobullous disorders, severe psoriasis, and CTCL, among others.
Contact Dermatitis: Dr. Zirwas is a nationally recognized contact dermatitis expert who operates a dedicated contact dermatitis practice that provides an exceptional opportunity for residents to develop expertise in contact dermatitis.
Light Therapy: A dedicated PUVA and NB-UVB center provides an opportunity for residents to gain experience using phototherapy.
Laser Therapy: There is a monthly laser clinic directed by Dr. Zirwas during which residents perform Pulsed Dye Laser (PDL) procedures for rosacea, warts, and other PDL responsive dermatologic conditions.
Cosmetic Dermatology: The residents have the opportunity of observation and some participation in a variety of cosmetic procedures including Botox injections, fillers injections, a variety of laser procedures, liposuction and dermabrasion. Drs. Londeree, Scarborough and Walker staff these.
