Trainees in Cardiovascular Medicine Fellowship program will typically have 6 months protected time over a 2 year period (usually years 2 & 3) for mentored basic science or clinical research. A mentoring timeline is detailed separately. This plan is the minimum that is expected for a cardiovascular medicine trainee.
It should be understood that, in most instances, the trainee will work in an area in which the primary mentor has both sufficient interest and expertise to provide a mutually rewarding mentor-trainee working relationship and collaboration.
The primary mentor is expected to:
-
Be available to meet with fellows during the fall of year 1 of fellowship (F1)
-
Meet regularly (at least once a month) with fellows as they organize, execute and analyze data during F2 and F3.
-
Assist the fellow in preparation of IRB proposals
-
Assist the fellow in abstract and manuscript preparation
-
Complete research trainee evaluation form semi-annually
The trainee is expected to:
-
Bear the responsibility of adherence to the research timeline
-
Provide minutes of each mentor-trainee meeting to the mentorship director
-
Complete a research project and eventually enter data into the public domain (national meeting, publication)
-
Collaborate with the mentor to provide a transitional plan for ongoing research to continue with a new fellow
