Fellows 36-Month Research Timeline

First year (F1)
- While fellows are required to spend a minimum of 6 months utilizing protected research time, execution of a meaningful research project from start to finish will take at least the full 36 month training period.

- Meet with mentorship director

- Define area of interest, meet with potential mentors\

- Attend either AHA or ACC scientific sessions with emphasis on further defining area of interest
- December
- Finalize choice of mentor/s, sign mentor-trainee contract

- Update program and mentorship directors on area of interest, mentor choice during 6 month review

- Meetings with mentor/s to formalize project

- Meet with program and mentorship directors to update on research planning; choose dates for protected research time during 2nd year

Second year (F2)

The second year of fellowship is spent starting the research project outlined at the end of the F1 year. Fellows will submit a protocol to the biomedical IRB, discuss their project at division grand rounds, and explore the possibility of submitting a research grant.
The majority of the research activities during the F2 year include enrollment of subjects (when applicable) and accumulation of data to be analyzed. During these 12 months, the fellow is required to meet with their mentor at least monthly, forwarding minutes of those meetings to the mentorship director.

- Proceed with research - meeting with mentor/s AT LEAST monthly - minutes must be forwarded to mentorship director

- July - December
- Submit abstract/s to national meeting
- Present abstract at national meeting
- Present project at division grand rounds
- Manuscript submission
- Complete project, prepare transition for new fellow to take over
- May - June
- Exit interview with mentorship director
