This website was constructed to provide details of the research program within the division of cardiovascular medicine. Policies described within reflect the requirements of the American College of Cardiology, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and its Residency Review Committee, as well as the OSU Fellowship Research Committee.
It is a requirement that all cardiovascular medicine fellows participate in meaningful research during their training, with the goal of developing skills in the following areas:
- Literature study
- Formulation of hypothesis and specific goals
- Development of a research plan and protocol
- Data collection
- Development of analytic methods or procedural skills
- Presentation of results
- Risk/benefit analyses
Cardiovascular research training at OSU takes place on 1 of 3 tracks:
| Level |
Training Population |
Duration of Training |
|
1 |
Trainees entering clinical practice |
6 to 12 months |
|
2 |
Trainees committed to teaching and clinical investigation |
6 to 12 months |
|
3 |
Trainees committed to basic or clinically advanced cardiovascular research |
1 to 2 years | All cardiovascular medicine fellows are required to participate in a minimum of 6 total months during their 36 month training program. Further research time is possible and encouraged on an individual basis. Fellow/mentor-initiated grant-supported research is also encouraged and commonly results in a 4th year of training.
Additional tracks of training include a Masters of Public Health or MPH with an emphasis in clinical investigation. For further details via the OSU College of Public Health, click here.
