2007-2008 Elective Opportunities

Elective rotations provide the opportunity for our residents to tailor their education to their individual career paths.  Numerous opportunities are available for residents to increase their exposure to content areas of interest to them, both within and outside the Department of Internal Medicine.

Some electives occur exclusively in either the inpatient or outpatient environment; while others have clinical opportunities that are in both environments.

Non Clinical Electives

OSUMC offers a number of electives which help residents develop non-clinical skills that are career enhancing or may help them decide on a particular type of career. These electives are constructed for the individuals and thus require advance planning.

Medical Education: Designed for residents interested in exploring the option of a career as a clinician educator, the medical education elective exposes residents to the variety of educational activities common to medical educators in academic centers.  Mentored by Drs. Catherine Lucey or Cynthia Ledford, residents choosing a medical education elective learn curriculum development, participate in peer review of teaching for faculty and residents; develop skills in web based education and can initiate an educational scholarship project.  Residents also participate in small group teaching of students in physical diagnosis, clinical problem solving, procedural skills, and diagnostic test interpretation.

Independent Research:  A variety of opportunities exist for interns and residents interested in engaging in basic science or clinical research.  Our faculty are outstanding mentors who have experience in identifying the types of projects in which residents will be successful.  Residents in the past three years have presented abstracts not only at the local and national ACP meetings but also at national specialty meetings (American Heart Association, American Society of Nephrology) and international meetings .

Medical Administration/Health Care Policy: Interns and Residents interested in medical administration and health care policy can work with the OSUMC Associate Medical Director, who is active not only in our institution but across the state with the Ohio State Medical Association and the American College of Physicians.
